All horses shown in the Open Classes are ridden by Robin Ratliff. And, A/O riders are the owners unless otherwise noted.

* September 2004: Grand National Show, Perry, GA

What an incredible month! We left the ranch two days early to avoid traveling in Hurricane Ivan and hurried home after the show on Sunday to beat Tropical Storm Jeanne. And, for 13 days in between, we were at the 32nd Grand National Show. This year saw Robin riding less and the Amateurs riding more and it paid off in a big way for John Solomon IV. John brought home a Reserve National Championship and a 4th Grand National Championship on his Performance Stallion, A Cappella's Carisma (who has never been to a National show where he didn't get at least a 2nd place!), and John got a 5th National Champion ribbon on his 3 year old fino filly, Fabulosita Sin Par. Ivey Solomon did well in the 4 year old Pleasure A/O Colts and Geldings class receiving an Honorable Mention. Great job, Ivey! Robin had a spectacular ride on her Performance Mare, Campanita del Caney, from the Besilu Collection. She received a 3rd National Champion ribbon. All after only having the mare for six weeks prior to the show. Great job, Robin!  Oh, and congratulations on GPR's purchase of that fabulous mare. Welcome to home, Campanita. Fabulosita Sin Par also came away with a National Championship in Bella Forma and a 3rd Grand National Championship in Bella Forma. Habanero LTD won a National Championship in the 2 year Bella Formas colt class and a 4th Grand National Bella Forma Championship, Colts and Stallions. Correador Sin Par won a Reserve National Championship in his 3 year old Bella Forma colt class. All in all, we had a great year and we can't wait to do it all over again starting in December!

Tropical Storm Bonnie didn't stop two trailers from heading to Hattiesburg MS for the Deep South Magnolia Classic! Luckily for us, there was light rain for the first two hours and then clear skies after that. We could not have asked for better weather during the show with lows in the '60s and highs in the mid-80s with clear skies. Congratulations to Nancy Mills on the great showing of her mare Aguardiente Sin Par. Nancy shows "Diente" in the A/O mare class, but Robin showed her in the Open classes and did very well.

What a show! Congratulations to the Everglades PFHA on their largest show yet and congratulations to Robin on High Point Trainer. Congrats to John IV on an excellent Saturday ride with Legado de Plebeyo Sin Par. Legado sure is a nice gelding. Perhaps Legado was showing off for his sire, Lumbre de Plebeyo Sin Par, who was in attendance this weekend as was Legado's half-sibling Lumbrada de Plebeyo Sin Par, another Lumbre off-spring. It's all in the family! Speaking of.....Carbonero Sin Par made his showing debut and did a good job under the watchful eye of his owner, Kathy Scher and family, who came down from New York for the weekend. They had a great time bonding between classes. Look out, friends and family, another half of a half-sibling combination, Corredor a Frente Sin Par is coming into his own doing a great job in Bella Forma and in his pleasure classes with John IV. Carbonero and Corredor are off-spring of Carnito QC as is Testimonio Con Alas a pleasure 3 year old colt ridden by his owner, Denise Van Ness this weekend. Not to be done yet, Testimonio's dam, Caliope Con Alas was on the show grounds as well.

It's always a fun time in Asheville and this year was no exception. The competition was very strong in all the classes. A few of the younger horses made names for themselves and a few of the older horses reminded the crowd they were still around. Daneen Hitchcock did very well in the Bella Forma classes. John Solomon IV had an excellent show. And, Nancy Mills did exceptionally well on her Pleasure Mare who is just returning to the ring. It appeared there may be a replay of last year's Performance Stallion class with head to head competition between A Cappella's Carisma and Simbolo JR, but this year's work-off was slightly different and the excitement of watching the two horses on the rail at the same time wasn't there. It was good to see them in the ring together though and in this writer's opinion, the work-off wasn't even close with A Cappella's Carisma flawlessly performing his serpentines and the board. However, one of the judges saw it differently and the two horses split the class. Does make an exciting build-up for Nationals!

What a great show! For those of you who did not make it to Andalusia this year, I highly suggest adding it to you show calendar for next year. The facilities are very nice, the stall area is roomy and well-designed, and the Gulf Region puts on a good time. This show's standout was Mike Andrews riding his mare Lumbrada de Plebeyo Sin Par. Mike did a good job of showing her in the A/O Pleasure Mare classes. We look forward to seeing more of Mike and Lumbrada this year. Way to go, Mike! Of course, not to be out done, last year's A/O Pleasure Mare Champion, Perla Negra de las Toscas and her rider, John Solomon IV looked great taking 3 of the 4 first place ribbons over the weekend.
